Solar Feed In Tariff
There are three components to the FIT. We describe them here to make it easy to understand how you can save money on your utility bills and make money by selling electricity back to the grid. You will always get a minimum payment for each unit of electricity generated.
Generated tariff: you get this payment for every unit that you generate and it comes direct from your energy supplier. It is up to you whether you use the electricity or sell it back – or rather it is dependent upon on your energy usage in your home.
Export tariff: Each kwh of power generated over and above what you use that is sold back to the grid commands a price premium. That is you get paid 3 pence per kwh over and above the generation tariff.
Traditional Savings: Because you are for some units using your own generated power you save on paying for traditionally generated electrical power. Plus you do your bit for the planet and your carbon foot print.
To qualify for your FIT rebate you must have an installed system after the 1st of April 2010 using an MCS installer. A MCS or Microgeneration Certification Scheme is a certification scheme for small micro-generation schemes under 50kW (which is typical for most homeowners). Review of FITs does occur and as with all government policy there is usually an intensive review.
