Solar energy…in space

Most of the solar radiation that hits the earth is wasted, it simply hits the ground, reflects and absorbs. However audacious schemes have been suggested to collect the sunlight from the upper atmosphere, convert it and beam it back to earth in a more efficient manner, in the form of say, microwaves or laser.

A satellite beaming energy back to earth could provide power for warzones. A new scheme pioneered by the University of Surrey aims to launch such a satellite, but the initial work comprises using a fibre laser to transmit the power, with work being undertaken in Germany.
